Southend Collegians Res Fall Short in the Cup Final



In an intense battle at The Len Forge Centre, Southend Collegians Reserves faced off against Catholic United A in the Southend Charity Cup Section C final. Despite a valiant effort, Collegians narrowly lost 3-2 in a tightly contested match.



The game kicked off with an electric atmosphere as fans from both teams filled the stands, ready to witness the thrilling encounter. It was Southend Collegians who took the lead in the 16th minute when Shane Wesley calmly converted a penalty, sending the crowd into jubilation.


Catholic United A quickly responded, coming close to equalizing around the 30-minute mark. A powerful header from a corner rattled the Collegians' defense, but luck was on their side as the ball ricocheted off the crossbar, maintaining their slender advantage.



However, Catholic United A managed to level the score in the 40th minute through a well-executed direct freekick, leaving both sides hungry for more. Just three minutes later, Catholic took the lead with another close-range header, this time from a freekick situation.

As the second half commenced, Catholic United A wasted no time extending their lead. In the 46th minute, a flicked header from a smartly taken freekick sailed over the keeper, leaving Collegians with an uphill battle.


Undeterred by the deficit, Southend Collegians Reserves displayed great resilience in the second half. They pressed high up the pitch, causing constant problems for the Catholic defense. Their persistence paid off in the 75th minute when Shane Wesley struck again, volleying the ball into the net from inside the box, securing his second goal of the match.


With only 10 minutes remaining, controversy struck as a Collegians player was fouled just as the referee was about to blow the whistle. In a cruel twist of fate, Collegians managed to score, but the advantage was not given, resulting in the disallowed goal.


In the dying moments of the game, Collegians had a glorious chance to equalize. A well-placed cross from the right found the head of a Collegians striker, but his close-range header was directed straight at the Catholic goalkeeper, denying Collegians a last-gasp goal.



Despite the disappointment of the loss, Southend Collegians Reserves showcased tremendous determination and skill throughout the match. The team fought until the very end, leaving their fans proud of their commendable performance.
