Southend Collegians (S) continued their fine run of form with a hard fought 4-1 win at home against Southend Rovers (S) Firsts.
Rovers began the game at bottom of the table, but you wouldn’t have thought it given how focussed they appeared during the first quarter. Rovers grew in confidence the more they kept Collegians at bay, with neither goalkeeper being really tested.
That changed just before halftime, when Collegians took the lead against the run of play when a Rovers player headed the ball into their own net from a corner. It was a fairly even first half, but SCFC went into the break 1-0 up.
Collegians' made a few changes at halftime which started to pay dividends with substitute Perry Osborne causing Rovers problems with his clever attacking runs. Osborne almost added to the scoresheet with a shot that came back off the upright early in the second half.
Collegians did finally make it 2-0 around the hour mark when Perry Osborne whipped in a cross from the left for Zac Munro, who managed to get just enough connection to send the ball into the net. The second goal really seemed to demoralise Rovers, who had competed well up until that point.
Collegians took further control of the match by making it 3-0, with super sub Perry Osborne adding a goal to his assist since coming on at halftime. Rovers hit back straight from kick-off to make it 3-1 going into the final stages of the game. But it was Collegians who had the last say in the match, with Rick Marsh getting his sides fourth and final goal of the day.
SCFC (S) manager, Dan Phillips, was pleased with the result but added:
“We must up our game on days like theses as Rovers pushed us all the way today”
Impressed by the performance that Southend Rovers put in, Dan said:
“Good luck with your season lads. Hopefully the second half of the season is yours and you start climbing off the bottom of the table”.
