Match Report: Southend Collegians (S) vs Power (S) Reserves

Updated: Feb 27, 2023

After winning by the same result last week, Southend Collegians (S) lost 3-4 to Power (S) Reserves in another thrilling game.

Power had the better start to the game and took an early lead, which they doubled on around the 20-minute mark as two SCFC defenders collided together to leave the opposition striker to score an easy goal.

But going 2-0 down early on seemed to re-focus the Collegian players, who started to pin Power in their own half with some well-worked ball control. The chances started to come, and so did SCFC’s first goal through a delightfully taken strike by the inform Rick Marsh, who keeps adding to his goals this season.

Before long, Collegians were back on level terms through a scrappy but deserved goal. Perry Osborne made the most of the referee playing advantage to tuck in SCFC’s second goal of the game. Shortly before halftime, Power was reduced to 10 men because one of their players was verbally abusive towards the referee.

Collegians couldn’t make the extra man count going into the second half, as Power became very compact and hard to break down. This in-itself led to Collegians going into their shell a little, which invited Power to take more control of the ball. Despite this, Collegians managed to nick the lead through a fortunate own goal from a sliced clearance.

The lead lasted only minutes, as Power equalised from the penalty spot on their very next attack. At 3-3, Power had the better of the game. They forced Collegian’s goalkeeper Jon Chase into more than a couple of top draw saves, including saving a second penalty!

Unfortunately, the pressure got to Collegian’s, who gave the ball away in the midfield, only for the Power player to smash home a 22-yard strike to take the 3 points.

Appreciating the never say die attitude of the opposition, Collegian’s Sunday manager Dan Phillips said:

“Well done to Power Reserves. You thoroughly deserved your win and good luck for the rest of the season”.
