Match Report: Southend Collegians (S) vs ATF Southend (S) Reserves

Updated: Feb 27, 2023

Southend Collegians (S) team continued their excellent run of form with a 3-0 victory over ATF Southend (S) Reserves on Sunday.

It was Collegians' last match of 2021, and they went into it full of confidence despite having a few regulars unavailable for the match. Despite the heavy rain, Southend Collegians played with vigor, pace, and strong ball control, which stretched ATF’s defense and allowed SCFC to dominate early.

The first goal came somewhat gift wrapped as an error by the ATF keeper allowed Ricky Marsh to slot the ball home shortly after kick-off. Collegians continued to dictate play, although didn’t create enough clear-cut chances for the manager's liking.

The only caveat to that was the weather, which was blustery and getting worse. It created significant difficulties when trying to cross the ball. Collegians battled through the elements and eventually got a second goal through Ricky Marsh again. The scoreline stayed 2-0 until the break.

“Keep doing what your doing” was the message from the manager at halftime, with a little more emphasis on keeping the clean sheet. With the weather creating a more even match, Dan Phillips didn’t want his side to let ATF back in the game through any sloppy errors.

But it was at the right end that Collegians made an impact in the second half, with Ricky Marsh securing a wonderful hattrick with a half volley from outside the 18-yard box. At 3-0 up, Collegians cruised the remainder of the match, finishing 2021 off in style.

At the end of the match, SCFC Sunday manager, Dan Phillips said:

“I just want to thank the lads for the performance and clean sheet today. We’ve finished the week top of the league. I also would like to thank the lads of ATF (S) Reserves. They are a great bunch and I wish them well for the rest of the season.”

Getting into the festive spirit Dan also added:

“Merry Christmas to all at Southend Collegians.”
