Match Report: Rochford Town Reserves vs. Southend Collegians A

Date: March 2, 2024

Venue: The Rochford Recreational Ground

Competition: Southend Borough & District Football Combination Division One

In a riveting encounter at Rochford Recreation Ground, Southend Collegians A showcased their resilience, securing a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Rochford Town Reserves.

Southend Collegians A took the early lead through Alex Casal, who saw his 'cross-shot' find the bottom corner from the edge of the 18-yard box. However, Rochford Town responded shortly after, leveling the score with a well-executed move.

The first half saw a series of chances at both ends, with both goalkeepers being kept busy. Unfortunately, Collegians' goalkeeper, Joe Cannell, suffered a hamstring injury, leading to a strategic reshuffle. Centre-back Massimo Salamini bravely stepped into the goalkeeper role, and Tom Foley shifted from left wing to center-back.

Despite the altered lineup, Southend Collegians A continued to exhibit excellent football at both ends of the pitch and saw out the first half level with Rochford. The second half commenced with the same intensity as the first, and Collegians seized the lead as Jason Peace tidily side-footed a well-delivered cross from Connor Tully past the diving Rochford keeper.

Rochford Town, however, mounted a strong comeback, creating challenges from numerous set-pieces throughout the rest of the match. However, it was Collegians who arguably had the better chances to score again. Connor Tully had a few decent changes from the edge of the 18-yard box, and Craig Heskey was a constant threat with his pace and direct running.

But Rochford stuck at their task, and on a breakaway counterattack, they scored the equaliser 10 minutes from full time. Despite the gut-wrenching disappointment of conceding late, Southend Collegians A reacted positively, creating three key chances to snatch a late victory.

At the final whistle, both teams shared a sense of disappointment with a draw but could also take solace in avoiding defeat. The 2-2 scoreline was arguably a fair reflection of the closely contested battle on the pitch.

This hard-fought point demonstrates the character and determination of Southend Collegians A, setting an optimistic tone for the challenges ahead in the Southend Borough & District Football Combination Division One.
