The Southend Collegians Sunday team continued their fine form with a comprehensive victory over Mornington Sunday Firsts.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Mornington Sunday Firsts could only field 10 players for this fixture. Despite this, Mornington gave a great account of themselves and made the match difficult for Collegians. As Sunday team manager Dan Phillips said, “anyone in football knows 10 men can be just as hard as 11 at times.”
The hot, dry weather added to the rough pitch conditions, which meant that Collegians couldn’t play their natural game. Collegians went one up through a goalkeeping error but struggled for possession and territory. It was only after a mid-half water break where Dan Phillips managed to spark the team into life, who then scored a further three goals before halftime.
In the spirit of good sportsmanship, Collegians lent Mornington a few players for the second half. This increase in numbers wasn’t enough to stop Collegians, who went on to score a further four goals in 15-minutes. A big part of this goal rout was through the excellent form of Perry Osborne, who scored a hattrick and was lively all game.
Mornington requested to forfeit at the 75th-minute mark, which meant that the scoreline would stand. Dan Phillips, accepted the forfeit, saying “anyone who loves this game truly knows there’s never a great feeling beating a team down when they were already up against it”.
Sunday Collegians manager also added:
“a massive well done and thank you to today’s opponents, Mornington first. They could have easily walked today, but they stuck with it. I wish them good luck for the season ahead and I am sure things will come good for them.”
The eight nil victory leaves Southend Collegians Sunday Team top on goal difference of Sceptre Sunday Football League division five.
