Southend Collegians (S) secured an impressive victory away to second place Hawkwell Athletic (S) Reserves at the weekend.
Due to injuries picked up recently, SCFC (S) manager, Dan Phillips, was forced to field a slightly rotated team that included some newly signed players. But the opposition wouldn’t have been able to tell as Collegians started on the front foot and took the game to Hawkwell Athletic.
The pitch conditions played their part by causing further injury issues for Collegians. Two reliable and key defenders, Stacey Tabernar and Jake Willoughby suffered ankle injuries earlier on in the game. Despite these setbacks, Collegians continued to dominate the first half and took the lead when Conor Lewis-Tully tucked away a neat penalty.
The second half continued as the first finished, with SCFC on top. It wasn’t too much longer before Collegians added to their lead, with Conor Lewis-Tully getting his second. Shortly after, Dan Kemm whipped in a dangerous freekick for Mike Trenkel to head it past the keeper to make it 3-0.
The attacking display continued throughout the second half, with Conor Lewis-Tully securing a fine hattrick with a beautifully lobbed shot that went in off the underside of the bar. Unfortunately, Collegians couldn’t see out the game with a clean sheet after conceding a penalty late in the game. But it was the Southend side who had the final say, with Rick Marsh nodding home from the corner to get the fifth goal of the day for the team.
The game finished 1-5 to Southend Collegians (S), with manager Dan Phillips complimenting his side’s performance by saying:
“A massive well done to the lads as that was a perfect TEAM performance and a special well done to man of the match on the day, Conor Lewis-Tully, who had an awesome game”.
